Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, Weston, West Virginia - ISS transiting the sun
Composite of 4 exposures showing a solar transit of the International Space Station. Photographed from Gallitzin State Forest, Pennsylvania, USA at 2015-08-29 14:12:42 UT. The duration of the transit was 0.8 seconds. The distance to the ISS was approximately 616 km and its angular size was about 45 arcsec. Planning for the transit was done using CalSky.com. Pentax K-5 II, Pentax DA* 300mm f/4, Tamron 1.4x teleconverter, ND 1000x filter. Exposures were 1/6000 second with the lens set to f/8 (for an f/11 effective aperture with the teleconverter). - Mosquito Creek in infrared
Banff National Park, Alberta Polaroid IR720 filter on unmodified Pentax K-5 II - One Shot #25 | Stream
State Game Lands 79, near Nanty-Glo, Pennsylvania. - Missed opportunity
I went outside at the edge of darkness, with an ND8 filter on the lens. I was set up for a 4 minute exposure to blur the clouds and the fog. I interrupted this exposure after 9 seconds, because I realized I forgot to cover the eyepiece. In reviewing the images, I realized I should have tried a short exposure. I like the striking pattern in the clouds, centered over the isthmus of land. To salvage this exposure, I had to brighten it by 5 stops in Lightroom (the maximum allowed), and then a bit more in Photoshop. The Pentax K-5 II holds up well, as usual. - Evening fog
- IR experiment
An experiment with an IR filter on the Pentax K-5 II, with a deleterious but interesting side-effect.
